The girls birthday party!

Maggie started planning her birthday party earlier this year. I kept telling her we had plenty of time, but it's amazing how quickly time creeps up on you! She decided early on she wanted to share a Frozen party with Allie. Both girls love the movie and the princesses, plus their birthdays are only a few weeks apart so it worked for me. We had their party yesterday, Aug. 26th.

Last year the girls shared a Paw Patrol birthday with Jake. We went to Disney in September, so I didn't have it in me to do two or three birthday parties. I had a little more fun with this party 'cause princesses, but didn't go overboard. I found a bunch of free printables, used items I have on hand and found some great food ideas on the Disney blog. Still took some work and planning, but all in all it was pretty easy.

Instead of moving tables & couches around, I decided to have the dessert table centerpiece in the dining room this year. Now that we have the buffet in there, it works out really nicely. I got my snowflake ornaments and fake snow out of the attic and went to work. The "some people are worth melting for" was a free printable I found and stuck in my own frame. I added a couple of our dolls, my own platters and draped a blanket I made for Maggie awhile back over a box to elevate the cake as the centerpiece. I liked it, but it was kind of boring. Then I remembered the balloons. Once I added those Saturday morning it was perfect!

I found a watercolor cake idea online and went with it. Again, simple but still cute and goes with the theme. I just couldn't make the castle stair cake Allie wanted happen this year. I really like how it turned out.

Covered the dining room table with a purple table cloth, added a couple more dolls and mini Frozen tin and wah-la, centerpiece. I probably should've used the Frozen table cloth in here, but it worked out fine. Below are the cookies I made for the girls. Each had their ages, names and initials, plus Anna & Elsa "dresses." Maggie had her stuff and Elsa on her side and Allie with Anna and her stuff on the other. :)

I did a pretty simple food setup, not needing a full meal for a 3pm party but everything went! I looked up Norwegian food and it's pretty heavy on fish & lamb, neither of which I was up for making, so I added in the meatballs but didn't even name them Norwegian or Swedish meatballs anyway so it didn't matter, lol. I made sandwiches for the kids and everything else was an idea from the Disney blog. I forgot to set out the snowman-decorated string cheese though.

Oh and there were people there too! Ha! ;)  Maggie loved having her little girl friends and cousins over. Allie did too! It was a great day, we all had a lot of fun.

Everyone loved the snowman slam! I had everything on hand for this game- small styrofoam cups, black & orange paper which I cut to make the faces and a sock rolled tightly for the ball. The kids played outside a lot but this was a fun activity as well. I also had ingredients to make snow, but we didn't get around to it.

Allie was running around when Maggie opened gifts but we got everyone in for cake time. :) I didn't get a lot of pictures during this time, but got some video. My friends were very complimentary of my setup, cookies & cake. Always nice to hear.

LOVE how the cake turned out! And it was yummy. :) "Wanna build a snowman" favors below and the guys outside playing as we say goodbyes.

A few more decorations- used items we already own, except the balloons- and the bottle labels. I also had kool-aid and sweet tea. But I never remember to take pics of the drink area. I usually make my own, but I found these free printables so took the easy way out! Who cares? They're still cute. :) Isla got to spend the night and go to church with us this morning. After dropping her off, we came home and the girls enjoyed putting together their snowmen.

Happy birthday to my girls! What a fun princess party we had. I love you so much.

Solar Eclipse

The Solar Eclipse has been well anticipated in our home and around the country. Fortunately for us, we're right in the path of totality so we didn't even plan to leave our house for the momentous event.
Last week our friends came over and we made eclipse t-shirts! The kids had so much fun doing this. Then I made a shirt for Daniel & I as well.

Had to get pictures of all the kids in their cute shirts, of course. Then they wanted to get a picture of me as well. :)

We studied the sun and solar eclipses all last week to prepare for today. We did some school work this morning then moved onto some fun activities before the eclipse began. First up, edible constellations. The kids had fun putting together all shorts of shapes and then eating them of course! Will's star was probably my favorite but I loved watching them use their imaginations.

Next, eclipse cookies. I'm in the process of making iced sugar cookies for the girls' party this weekend, so I made a couple circles while baking and set aside a little royal icing. So this is just half an oreo (moon) glued onto the sugar cookie (sun) with a little bit of icing. Looks like an eclipse! I found these ideas online, btw, can't take credit for that. The kids enjoyed this as well but I think they actually had more fun with the constellations.

Time to go outside, the eclipse has begun! We still have a couple hours before totality at this point, but it was neat watching the moon move through the stages. The kids found it really cool. We were prepared with our snacks as well. :) Except moon pies. Couldn't find them anywhere.

Allie for some reason thought it was going to snow and went inside to dress for such an occasion, LOL! I don't know what gave her this idea (actually I think Jake asked if it would snow) but she sure is cute! She was well prepared. :) Monkey Jake below and further down Allie had to copy her big brother.

Unfortunately, clouds moved in about 10 minutes before totality and didn't part until after totality ended. Daniel and I still got glimpses of it through the clouds, but the kids didn't really get it. Disappointing for sure that we didn't get the total effect. But it was still a really cool experience. Day still turned night, dogs were howling, crickets chirping, street lights came on.

What an epic day experiencing God's greatness and how small we are in His vast universe! A bit of a let down come totality, especially for the kids, but overall a great day.
